What is a wisdom tooth?
A wisdom tooth or teeth are back molars that erupt between ages 17 – 24. They are the last adult teeth individuals will get in development. You can get up to four wisdom teeth at the corners of your mouth, but some individuals will never get any wisdom teeth at all.
In most cases, wisdom teeth don't need to be extracted. But when they do pose a problem, a wisdom tooth removal in Sydney is the only solution.

Should I book a wisdom tooth consultation?
If you are experiencing:
- Pain
- Pressure
- Sensitivity
- Radiating pain through the jaw
- Facial swelling
- Difficulty opening your mouth
- Tender, red or swollen gums
- Pus around the area of the wisdom tooth
Then you should book a wisdom teeth consultation with a professional dental practitioner, such as our dentists at The TLC Dentist, to get assessed. Our dentists will be able to perform an inspection and take X-rays to understand the condition of your wisdom teeth and recommend any treatment needed.

When wisdom teeth may need extraction
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
An impacted wisdom tooth is a wisdom tooth that cannot fully erupt in the mouth because of other teeth or because of its angle.
There are four common ways a wisdom tooth can be impacted by angle:
- Mesial impaction (angled towards another tooth)
- Vertical impaction (erupts too close to another tooth)
- Distal impaction (angled towards the back of the mouth)
- Horizontal impaction (horizontally positioned towards other teeth)

Problems wisdom teeth can cause
If your wisdom tooth (or teeth) are impacted, decayed or partially removed, and not removed in a timely manner, they can cause ongoing problems:
- Crowding
- Misalignment
- Jaw pain and pressure
- Radiating pain through the ear and jaw
- Bad breath (from partially erupted wisdom teeth)

Wisdom teeth removal procedure
Expert Care, Stunning Results.

Consultation & examination
Before extraction, the dentist examines the mouth, takes x-rays, and discusses the treatment plan, reviewing medical history to ensure candidacy.

Sedation
Before extraction, the dentist numbs the area with local anaesthetic. They may also offer sedation or general anaesthesia for comfort.

Tooth extraction
The dentist will remove the wisdom tooth from the socket, possibly dividing it into smaller pieces based on its size and position.

Post-extraction care
After tooth removal, the dentist places gauze to control bleeding and provides care instructions, including gauze changes and foods to avoid.

Follow up
The patient will have a follow-up to check the extraction site. Multiple follow-ups may be needed to monitor healing.

Aftercare after wisdom teeth removal

- 01
Rest and limit physical activity
Rest and avoid physical activity that increases blood flow to the extraction site for a few days after the procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least a week to prevent bleeding and discomfort. - 02
Apply ice and heat
Use an ice pack on the cheek near the extraction site for 24-48 hours to reduce swelling and pain. After that, apply heat to promote healing and ease discomfort. - 03
Follow a soft diet
For the first few days post-procedure, stick to a soft diet to avoid irritating the site. Avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods like nuts and popcorn, as they can delay healing. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
