Who Requires A Regular Checkup?
Everyone benefits from a regular check-up. Adults, teens and younger children should see a dentist every six months to keep their teeth and gums in optimal condition. During every checkup, your clinician examines your mouth for early signs of decay, gum inflammation, enamel wear, oral cancer and any changes since your last visit.
Minor dental issues often develop quietly. A small cavity or early gum irritation can progress into pain, infection or tooth loss if ignored. Regular visits allow us to catch and treat problems early so you maintain a strong, healthy smile.

What Are Dental Checkups and Cleanings?
A dental cleaning is a professional procedure designed to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from your teeth and gumline. Even if you brush twice a day, these deposits build up in areas your toothbrush cannot fully reach.
During your appointment, your clinician or hygienist will:
- Assess gum and tooth health
- Use ultrasonic and hand instruments to remove tartar
- Clean along and beneath the gumline
- Smooth the enamel to reduce plaque buildup
- Apply fluoride to strengthen your teeth
If you have gum disease or deeper pockets around your teeth, we may recommend a deeper clean known as periodontal scaling. This treatment reaches below the gumline to remove bacteria that cause inflammation and bone loss.

Why Regular Dental Checkups Matter in Sydney
A professional cleaning in Sydney does far more than refresh your smile. It removes plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing cannot shift. These deposits irritate your gums and create the perfect environment for decay and gum disease. Routine checkups also help you:
- Detect dental issues while they are still simple to treat
- Maintain fresher breath and healthier gums
- Prevent costly restorative work
- Strengthen enamel with fluoride
- Monitor your overall oral health as it changes over time
Even if your home care is excellent, professional cleaning is essential for long-term dental health.

Dental Cleaning Costs in Sydney
The Average Cost of a Dental Cleaning in Sydney
In Sydney, dental clean costs vary by clinic and clinician experience. Standard clean and checkup fees range from $200 to $450, with extra charges for X-rays, fluoride, or extended cleaning.
Surveys by the Australian Dental Association indicate that preventative appointments have itemised fees. The average cost for a new patient without private health cover exceeds two hundred dollars.
This variation can be confusing when comparing clinics, which is why TLC Dentist keeps pricing simple while ensuring all essential items are included.
Your clean concludes with gentle polishing to brighten your smile and leave your teeth feeling smooth and refreshed.

The Benefits OfA Regular Checkup
-
Early detection of dental problems
Regular check-ups can help your dentist detect any dental problems early on before they become more serious and potentially require more invasive treatment.
-
Preventative care
Routine professional cleanings and tailored advice keep small issues from escalating, so you spend less on restorative work down the line.
-
Oral cancer screening
Your clinician checks soft tissues, gums and the back of the mouth for early signs of oral cancer at every six-monthly visit — the earlier it’s caught, the better the outcomes.
-
Education and advice
You’ll leave with personalised guidance on brushing technique, flossing, diet and any specific concerns you raised during the appointment.
-
Overall health
Oral health is linked to your wider wellbeing — gum disease has been associated with cardiovascular conditions, diabetes complications and more. Looking after your teeth supports the rest of you.
-
Cost savings
A clean and check-up every six months is far cheaper than a root canal or extraction. Preventative care is the single best investment in your dental budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your Guide toBoutique Dental Care

-
What is included in the initial new patient package?
Your first appointment at The TLC Dentist is booked in for 45 minutes with our Oral Health Therapist. This appointment includes:
- A 3D full-mouth OPG X-Ray (which is free or GAP-free if you have private health insurance)
- Two smaller 2D X-Rays to assess your molar teeth in closer view
- A full mouth examination followed by a thorough scale and polish clean
- Fluoride Treatment
Upon examining your teeth our Oral Health Therapist will listen to any concerns you have with your teeth and determine whether further restorative treatment is required. At this time our Principal dentist Dr. Dimitri will come in to meet you and talk you through any X-ray findings, and to discuss the treatment options if any.
Before leaving you will be gifted a dental travel pack that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and mouthwash as a thank you for choosing The TLC Dentist.
-
Do I need dental X-Rays?
X-Rays let your clinician see what’s happening between your teeth, under your gums and inside the bone — the bits a visual exam alone can’t reach. We recommend a full set every 2–3 years and bite-wings annually for adults, more often if you’re managing active gum disease or complex restorative work.
-
Do you accept all private health funds?
Yes — we’re HICAPS-enabled, which means we can process your private health rebate at the chair so you only pay the gap. Bring your physical or digital health-fund card to your appointment and we’ll do the rest.
