What Is Airway Dentistry?

Airway dentistry focuses on how the mouth, jaw, and airway shape affect breathing, especially during sleep. It recognizes that breathing impacts overall health and development. Restricted airways can cause mouth breathing, snoring, disturbed sleep, and long-term health issues like sleep apnoea.

Unlike traditional dentistry, airway dentistry takes a broader approach, examining tongue posture, jaw alignment, and nasal breathing for healthy patterns, especially at night.

At The TLC Dentist, we assess airway issues early in children and adults to prevent facial development problems and fatigue. By working with health professionals, we guide jaw growth and support healthy breathing for better sleep.

How We Can Help

Our team at The TLC Dentist takes a holistic and collaborative approach to airway health. During your comprehensive dental examination, we don't just check for cavities — we also assess breathing patterns, tongue posture, jaw development, and other airway-related factors.

When needed, we work closely with sleep physicians, ear nose and throat specialists (ENTs), myofunctional therapists, and orthodontists to create a care plan tailored to your needs.

How We Can

Our airway-focused services may include:

  • Early interceptive care for children with developing jaws
  • Myofunctional therapy support
  • Jaw pain and pressure
  • Referrals for sleep studies when sleep apnoea is suspected
  • Referrals for custom oral appliances to support breathing during sleep
  • Education on proper breathing, swallowing, and tongue posture

What Is Involved in Early Interceptive Care?

Early interceptive care is a proactive approach that focuses on identifying and addressing issues with jaw development, facial growth, and airway function before they become more serious or harder to treat. It is most effective in children while they are still growing — usually between the ages of 3 and 12 — when we have the greatest opportunity to guide proper development in a natural, non-invasive way.

At The TLC Dentist, early interceptive care involves a detailed and holistic assessment of your child's:

  • Breathing patterns (nose vs. mouth breathing)
  • Tongue posture and function
  • Swallowing habits
  • Lip seal and facial muscle activity
  • Jaw growth and alignment
  • Tooth eruption and spacing
  • Sleep quality and nighttime behaviours (snoring, restlessness, bedwetting, etc.)

From there, we develop a personalised plan that may include one or more of the following:

Myofunctional Therapy

Gentle, fun exercises designed to retrain the muscles of the face, lips, tongue, and jaws. These help encourage correct tongue posture, nasal breathing, and healthy swallowing patterns — all crucial for proper airway development.

Habit Correction
Orthodontic Growth Guidance

Why Airway Matters

Breathing should be easy — day and night. When airway issues are present, they can have far-reaching effects on health, mood, learning, and development. Catching these concerns early can help avoid complex problems later in life.

At The TLC Dentist, we’re passionate about helping children and adults breathe better, sleep better, and thrive.
